Geopolitical Codes

Geopolitical codes determine the positioning of a country in a global neighborhood. In the global set up, states and other geopolitical entities such as regions and places behave as actors who interact on the world stage. Each actor interacts with other countries differently depending on multiple factors which determine the geopolitical preference of that nation.

Geopolitical codes are based on five key pillars:

  • Who are our allies now, and who could become our ally?
  • Who are our enemies now, and who could become our enemy?
  • How can we keep our current allies and make potential allies like us more?
  • How can we defend against our current enemies and against new threats?
  • How do we present and justify the previous four questions to our own public and to the rest of the global community?

Nature of Codes

Different states form different geopolitical codes for them to influence of the geopolitical situation of the world in their favor. The code is based on the self interest of the nation.

Based on the power and influence of a country on other nations the geopolitical code can be designated as local, regional, or global.

For many countries their main, if not sole, concern is with their immediate neighbors: are they friends or enemies, is increased trade or imminent invasion the issue? But some countries profess to develop a regional geopolitical code in which they have influence beyond their immediate neighbors. China’s calculations toward expanding influence in Southeast Asia are a good example, as is Egypt’s role within the Arab world.  some countries purport to have global geopolitical codes. For example, NATO’s geopolitical code is global in nature.
