Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

• The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were eight international development qoals for the year 2015.
• They were established in the Millennium Summit of the UN in 2000.
• These were based on the OECD DAC International Development Goals agreed by Development Ministers in the “Shaping the 21st Century Strategy”.
• The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) succeeded the MDGs in 2016.

8 Goals

• Eradicate extreme hunger and poverty
• Achieve universal primary education
• Promote gender equality and empower women
• Reduce child mortality
• Improve maternal health
• Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases
• Ensure environmental stability
• A global partnership for development^[2]

UN Millennial Project

• The Millennium Project was an initiative that focused on detailing the organizational means, operational priorities, and financing structures necessary to achieve (MDGs).
• In order to support the MDGs, UN launched the Millennium Project to determine the best strategies for achieving the MDGs.
• The Project was headed by Professor Jeffry Sachs.
• The Millennium Project worked from 2002 to 2005 to devise a recommended plan of implementation that would allow all developing countries to meet the MDGs and thereby substantially improve the human conditions by 2015.
• Ten theme-oriented task forces have been created in order to perform the majority of the research.
• Each Task Force is composed of 15-20 members who are all international leaders in their specific area, and are selected on the basis of their practical experience and technical expertise.
